Little Blackcats Daycare Food Program
Little Blackcats Daycare LLC follows the USDA guidelines for preparation and serving of meals and snacks.
We will provide nutitional, tasty and satisfying meal and snacks to children in our care. Our role is to encourage children to try new food, textures, and taste that are offered. No child will ever be denied a meal or snack and no food will be forced upon children, although taking one bite of food may be encouraged by staff to help children try new meals.
It is our pledge to present food in a manner that is familiar to your child. We are going to follow the USDA recommendation of creating two weeks of options for our menus and serving those meal for two cycles. This allows children to become familiar with new foods and allows us to find out what your children like or dislike. Our meals will be served family style and children will serve themselves with staff assistance. Your child will be an active participant in mealtime to encourage eating a balanced diet.
Proteins will be baked, broiled, or air fried. For example, chicken nuggets will be made from fresh chicken that has been hand breaded and air fried. Primary proteins will be chicken, hamburger, turkey, and pork.
Vegetables will be roasted, steamed, or boiled in vegetable stock to retain flavor and nutritional value. New vegetables will be introduced into your child's diet each week.
Fruits-We will introduce new fruits, fresh and dried each week.
Foods that present a choking hazard, such as grapes will be quartered or halved before being served.
Breads, rolls, buns, and breakfast breads will be made with a combination of whole wheat and enriched flour to meet USDA guidelines for the whole grain requirements for meals.
Other grains such as brown or wild rices, oatmeal, and quinoa will be used to introduce your child to new textures.
Seasonings-The USDA recommends limited use of salt as a method of seasoning, we will supplement limited salt with a variety of other seasonings, fresh and dried herbs.
Fats and Sugar-The USDA recommends limited use of fats and sugars in foods being served. Good Fats such as olive oil will be used in small amounts. We will use cooking spray to brown food like chicken nuggets. Freshly prepared fruit spreads, using limited sugar, will be used for pancakes and waffles. We will add flavor using such things as vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.
Dairy-Whole Milk will be served to children twelve to twenty-three months, and 1% will be served to students two years of age and up. Yogurt will be used for dressings and to puree some fruits.
Snacks-We will follow USDA guidelines for our youth. Infants and toddlers aged twelve months to two years of aged will be served age appropriate snacks such as cheerios, veggie straws, cheese crackers, soft fruits, applesauce, or pureed vegetables.
We will also have some fun with our menu and coordinate meals with events or holidays that are on our calendar.
